The Early Years: My Literacy Journey

Hi! I'm Hannah, and while I am majoring in Criminal Justice and have aspirations to be an attorney one day, when I was younger, all I did was write stories. I loved imagining things and I loved coming up with my own characters in my fictional novel. I wanted to be an author when I grew up, and me and my best friend at the time both loved writing stories together. I know most people dislike writing essays and writing in general for school, but English was always my favorite subject growing up, because I had a natural passion for writing!

As I grew up, my hobbies shifted slightly and I stopped writing as much, with less free time on my hands to do so. However, that passion never left, and to this day, I still find comfort in writing and it comes to me easier than any other subject!

I would definitely describe myself as a writer more than a reader in school. I would love to, in this course, become a better writer than I already am, and be able to analyze texts better. I read here and there, but it is mostly texts that pertain to my hobbies or interests! I would love to be able to gain a passion for reading and read for more than a purpose of understanding the text, but to also gain more skills for my writing.

Fashion

Again, ever since I was little, I loved fashion and decorating. I was always in art classes and had little fashion shows for my family. In a way, while I didn't know it then, I was able to tell my own story with what I wore. In a way, that was another way of "writing". Even today, I love to continue to express myself through my clothing; I've never been one to fit into a box, I love going outside the box, and writing my own story the way I want to! I also love to read fashion magazines and different texts from fashion icons to inspire me!

Modeling

To model, you have to talk to all sorts of people and interact with different backgrounds of people. Through modeling and my competitive swimming career, I've learned how to interact with all different types of people, and this has shown me that literacy is not only about reading books or writing, it can also be how you interact with people and communicate. I love talking about my hobbies, events in my life, training, my future aspirations, etc. with all different people because it can give me many different perspectives on one topic!

Swimming

I began competitively swimming at 10, and ever since then, I've loved the way it calms my mind to be in the water and be in my own thoughts. To better myself in this sport, I've had to read many articles and watch videos in detail to make myself a better athlete.

I love talking about my passion about swimming with almost everyone, but especially my teammates because they obviously understand the demands of the sport better than anyone else would. I love talking about my future aspirations and my other careers with friends and family too!

Final Thoughts

I think reading and writing can be used in many different ways, more ways than we realize! It is interesting and fascinating how we can incorporate literacy into the bigger world outside of an English class.

Below are some texts I read to get inspired or am passionate about reading!
